The first get together of folks interested in putting together a Vizsla club was in August of 1999. It was at the future home site of Shani Matkins in Baton Rouge. The following December a Christmas party was held on the property of Bill and Cherie Brumfield in Baker, Louisiana. Several Vizsla owners and their dogs enjoyed a bonfire and fried turkey sandwiches.
The first official meeting was held at the new home of Shani Matkins in Baton Rouge on March 2, 2000. There were 13 people in attendance. The first officers were Adele Neupert, President, Carole Stout, Vice-President, Renee Miller, Secretary, Shani Matkins, Treasurer. Board members were Joan Brenes, Mike Dougerty and Bill Brumfield. Committee cEddie Huntinghairpersons were Field, Mike Dougerty, Show, Shani Matkins, Obedience and Agility, Carole Stout, Hospitality, Joan Brenes, and Newsletter, Carole Stout. Those in attendance agreed that the name should be the South Louisiana Vizsla Club.
Monthly meetings were held the first year at one of the public libraries in Baton Rouge. The first task was to produce and adopt a constitution and bylaws for the club. We used samples from the AKC, Texas Gulf Coast Vizsla club, Tampa Bay Vizsla club and the Vizsla Club of America. It took several meetings to iron out the details. The final form was voted on September 7, 2000 and sent to AKC. It was approved pending several revisions. Those revisions were made and voted on in June 2001 and approved by AKC. The AKC granted the SLVC Sanctioned 'A' hunt test and field trial status and required us to hold 2 'A' Merry Christmas Noelmatches in each venue.
